On the 29th of April, 1,600 migrant workers attacked Hyderabad police and staged dharna with a demand of shifting them to their native villages.
The attack took place in the morning of the 29th of April at Kandi area of Sangareddy district, 58 km from Hyderabad. The incident took place at a construction site of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kandi. The construction of the IIT was in the second phase when the lockdown was implemented.
Since the 24th of March, 1,600 workers from Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar are stranded, demanding to go back to their native places. The workers even complained of negligence and delay in wages by L&T Company and said they were starving from the past two weeks.
The Telangana Government camps and food for these workers, who were unable to go to their native villages during the lockdown.
The situation worsened, when the labourers started stone pelting on police injuring a few policemen and damaging their vehicles. When the incident turned violent, S. Chandrashekar Reddy, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Sangareddy, deployed additional forces to control the situation.
The senior police officers asked the labourers to send six people from their group and brief them about the situation to the district collector.
On the other hand, the Telangana Government announced food, shelter, free ration and Rs. 1,200 to all the migrant workers during the lockdown.
The lockdown is proposed to end on the 7th of May in Telangana.
