In Telangana’s Hyderabad city, potatoes cost higher than usual.

Due to the recent heavy rain and short supply of potatoes, the sellers are selling the vegetable for Rs. 50 to Rs. 60 per kg.

In retail stores, the prices doubled whereas in Rythu Bazar, potatoes witnessed a a slight increase.

While retail stores are selling potatoes worth Rs. 50 or Rs. 60, Rythu Bazar in Hyderabad are selling the same worth Rs. 45.

In the past few days the supplies of potatoes in the city have been affected badly. This resulted in increased prices across all vegetable markets by traders.

According to the traders, the present price of potatoes is the highest in the last several years. J. Shekhar, a trader said, “This is not a season for potatoes and we need to depend on other States for the supply. The lockdown followed by torrential rains have hit supply of potatoes from parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Agra.”

P Ramesh, the Estate Officer of Erragadda Model Rythu Bazar, said, “We receive local potatoes during November and December mostly from Medak and some parts of Rangareddy.”

As of now Erragadda Rythu Bazaar is receiving 40 quintals to 50 quintals of potatoes every day from different places. Once the local potatoes would be available in the market, the prices would reduce.

Meanwhile, the prices of other vegetables like tomatoes and green chillies reduced.

According to sources, one kg tomatoes which were worth Rs. 40 is now being sold for Rs. 20 a kg across Rythu Bazaars.

Similarly, green chilies, which were sold for over Rs. 50 a kg in October are now Rs. 35 a kg, while lady fingers, brinjal and donda were available for Rs. 40, Rs. 40 and Rs. 35 kg respectively. In addition, onions which were Rs. 80 per kg are now available at Rs. 54 a kg in Rythu Bazaars.

The prices are likely to fall down once local vegetables hit the market.

Besides Hyderabad, potatoes are expensive in Karnataka, Kolkata, Chennai and other cities as well.
