Tadepalli: YSRCP spokesperson and MLA Tatiparthi Chandrasekhar strongly criticized the ruling coalition government for denying the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairmanship to the opposition, calling it a “dark day in parliamentary democracy.” Speaking to the media on Friday, he accused the government of undermining democratic conventions to avoid scrutiny of its financial mismanagement.
Chandrasekhar highlighted that it has been a longstanding parliamentary tradition to appoint an opposition member as PAC chairperson to ensure transparency in state finances. However, he alleged that the coalition government bypassed this practice with the sole intention of silencing accountability.
Despite YSRCP leader Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy being in the fray, the government’s actions deprived the opposition of its rightful position. Chandrasekhar noted that past PAC chairpersons from opposition parties, such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee and PV Narasimha Rao, exposed major scams like Bofors and 2G Spectrum.
Accusing the government of a deliberate move to sideline democratic principles, Chandrasekhar stated that YSRCP, with 11 seats, is the only opposition in the Assembly and called the denial of the PAC chairmanship an attack on the institution’s integrity.
He also condemned the detention of Dalit leader and former MP Nandigama Suresh, as well as the harassment of social media activists critical of the government.
