New Delhi: The much-discussed ‘One Nation, One Election’ plan, aimed at conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies, is set to be introduced in Parliament. The Center will table the One Nation, One Election Bill, alongside the proposed 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill, in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, December 17.
According to government sources, Union Law Minister Arjunram Meghwal will present the bills and request Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to send them to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed deliberation. Subsequently, the Speaker is expected to ask political parties to nominate members for the proposed committee, with the final list of members likely to be announced later that day.
The committee, which will have proportional representation from all major parties in Parliament, will be chaired by a BJP MP, the largest party. Initially, the committee will be given a 90-day timeline for consultations, which may be extended if necessary.
The idea of simultaneous elections has gained traction after a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind recommended combining Lok Sabha, Assembly, and local body elections. On December 12, the Union Cabinet approved two key bills for Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, excluding local body polls for now.
