India Misses One T20 World Cup Milestone, But Three Historic Feats Still Up for Grabs
In a dramatic turn at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, host nation India saw one key record slip away after a defeat to South Africa on February 22, but the defending champions are far from finished on the global stage.
India had the opportunity to extend their own record for the most wins in a single T20 World Cup edition — a mark they currently hold with eight victories from the 2024 tournament — but the loss ensured they finish the group stages short of that milestone.

However, all is not lost. With two Super 8 clashes remaining — against Zimbabwe and the West Indies — India still have a chance to carve out new chapters in cricket history. Here’s what’s still on the table:
1. A Third T20 World Cup Title:
No men’s side has ever won the T20 World Cup three times. India, along with England and the West Indies, currently sit on two titles. Adding a third would see India set an all-time benchmark.
2. Back-to-Back Championships:
Should India lift the trophy again in 2026, it would be the first time a team has secured consecutive T20 World Cup wins — an achievement that eluded even the most dominant sides in the past.
3. Winning as Hosts:
Another rare feat on offer: India could become the first host nation to win the T20 World Cup. No team in tournament history has claimed the title on home soil.
