On the 20th of May, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government passed a resolution in the Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) Assembly.
The Industries Minister of A.P., Mekapati Goutham Reddy moved the resolution opposing the privatisation of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. The resolution was passed during the one day Budget Assembly session, on Thursday.
The YSRCP Minister with the unanimous approval of the Members of the Legislative Assembly urged the Central Government to consider the resolution. The Industry Minister of A.P., passed the resolution on behalf of Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of A.P.
Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy urged previously requested the Government of India (GoI) for making the VSP profitable without privatising the company.
Speaker of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly Tammineni Sitaram said that the resolution is passed as majority members of the House have opposed steel plant privatisation. With this, the passed resolution would be forwarded to the Central Government for consideration.
The fight against privatisation of the VSP is going since the Central Government announced to disinvest in VSP. The Central Government decided to go ahead with 100 % disinvestment of Government of India`s equity in RINL along with RINL`s stake in subsidiaries/joint ventures. It would be done through strategic disinvestment by way of privatisation.
However, the people of Andhra Pradesh and Visakhapatnam, especially VSP employees expressed disappointment and are opposing the same.
