The Andhra Pradesh Government issued a gazette notification to remove Ms. Sunkara Pavani as the Mayor of the Kakinada Municipal Corporation.
The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) issued the removal notification after Ms. Sunkara Pavani lost the no confidence motion. It is to be noted, the corporators of the Kakinada Municipal Corporation moved a floor test against Ms. Sunkara Pavani, after alleging her of dictatorship. The no confidence motion was passed under Section 91 / A (6) of the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 1955.
After losing the no confidence motion, she would no longer be the Mayor of the Kakinada Municipal Corporation. According to sources, Mr. Y. Srilakshmi, the Special Chief Secretary, Department of Municipalities, issued the GO No. 129.
Besides Ms. Sunkara Pavani, the YSRCP Government, removed Mr. Kala Sathibabu, the Deputy Mayor of the Kakinada Municipal Corporation.
Now, after the removal, Mr. Chodipalli Prasad, the Deputy Mayor of the Municipal Corporation would be working as the ‘Acting Mayor,’ until a new Mayor is selected. As per laws, if a Mayor is removed, the power of the Mayor is transferred to the working Deputy Mayor, until the new elections.
With this, the YSRCP Government is expected to write to the Election Commission of India (ECI) urging them to hold a fresh election for the Kakinada Municipal Corporation. The dates of the Municipal Corporation election for the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor position are expected soon.
