AP Govt Decides To Postpone Local Bodies Elections In Amaravati

The Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) Government, on the 9th of March, announced they would not  conduct the Municipal elections and Gram Panchayat elections in Amaravati.

The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) said since the Capital issues are pending with the A.P., High Court, the upcoming elections would not be held.

The Municipal elections would be held on the 23rd of March and Gram Panchayat elections would be held in two phases, on the 27th of March and the 29th of March.

The results of the Municipal elections would be announced on the 29th of March.

The A.P., Government, on the 9th of March urged the State Election Commission (SEC) to withdraw all the 29 villages of Amaravati from the election’s list.

On the 6th of  March Gopal Krishan Dwivedi, the Principal Secretary (Panchayat Raj and Rural Development)  wrote a letter to the SEC secretary asking them not to conduct the elections in Amaravati villages.

The reason to do so is  the pending court cases and the process of being included into nearby municipalities/nagar panchayats or being declared as new urban local bodies (ULBs.)

The withdrawal of Amravati villages from the municipal, ZPTC, MPTC and Gram Panchayat elections could be a major drawback for the Telugu Desam Party (TDP.)

With the ongoing agitation of the Amaravati farmers, the TDP was looking forward to win the municipal and local bodies elections against the YSRCP.

The major parties contesting the municipal and local bodies elections are the alliance of the JanaSena Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) the YSRCP and the TDP.
