The Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, plans to invite top foreign universities to set up campuses in the state. The move aims to help students access international education without having to travel abroad.
According to a report by Gulte, the State Cabinet has approved a proposal to invite universities ranked among the world’s top 100 in the QS rankings. In the first phase, five institutions will be given an opportunity to set up campuses in AP.
The Cabinet has also decided to form a high-level committee led by the state Chief Secretary to take the plan forward.
The proposed campuses could come up in key cities, including Amaravati and Visakhapatnam. Students may then have more options to study international courses closer to home, potentially reducing travel and education costs for families.
However, the plan still needs further steps. The state must seek Central government approval to bring foreign universities to Andhra Pradesh.
The report said Union Minister and Guntur MP Pemmasani Chandrasekhar would be responsible for discussing the proposal with the Centre.
