The Telangana government has approved the purchase of 3,000 MW of solar power, backed by 6,000 MWh of battery storage, for the next 25 years.
The Energy Department issued a government order for the project through the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Limited (TGREDCO).
Private companies will be selected through competitive bidding to develop and operate the projects. Telangana’s power distribution companies will buy electricity at rates set through the bidding process.
The decision comes as the state’s electricity demand continues to rise. Growth in industries, cities, data centres and electric vehicles is expected to increase the need for power. Major projects, including the Regional Ring Road and Future City, may also add to demand.
The government said solar power can help lower electricity costs. Battery storage will allow the state to use stored solar energy during peak-demand hours, including when electricity use is high.
The plan also supports Telangana’s Clean and Green Energy Policy 2025, which aims to add 16,000 MW of solar power capacity by 2030.
TGREDCO has been directed to take the steps needed to carry out the procurement.
