On the 10th of May, a renowned santoor player Pandit Shivkumar Sharma took his last breath, at his Mumbai residence.
According to Mr. Shivkumar Sharma’s secretary Mr. Dinesh, Panditji died due to a heart attack on the morning of the 10th of May. He said, “Mr. Dinesh said, “He had a severe heart attack in the morning… He was active and was to perform in Bhopal next week. He was on regular dialysis but was still was active.”
Highlighting the achievements and career of Mr. Shivkumar Sharma, he was famous in the classical music industry and stringed instruments, taking santoor (musical instrument) and classical music to the global stage. He successfully straddled the worlds of classical and film music. He was also a Padma Vibhushan recipient and was the first musician to have played Indian classical music on the santoor, a folk instrument from Jammu and Kashmir.
Furthermore, even at the age of 84, Mr. Shivkumar was active and was due to perform in Bhopal next week.
He is survived by his wife Ms. Manorama and sons Rahul, also a santoor player, and Rohit.
Meanwhile, after hearing about the demise of Mr. Shivkumar Sharma, Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, took to Twitter and expressed his condolences. He said, “Our cultural world is poorer with the demise of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji. He popularised the Santoor at a global level. His music will continue to enthral the coming generations. I fondly remember my interactions with him. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
