The Air India flight, arriving from New Delhi, touched down on the airport’s 3.8-kilometre runway — one of the longest in the country — in the presence of Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, local MPs, senior officials and aviation experts.

Authorities conducted the commercial validation flight to test key systems such as runway performance, navigational aids, and air traffic control ahead of full-scale passenger operations. Authorities reported that around 96% of construction works are now complete, with remaining civil and interior works nearing finalisation.

Once operations begin, the airport—officially named Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport—will significantly improve connectivity for North Andhra Pradesh, offer a new gateway to major cities, and ease pressure on Visakhapatnam airport.

Officials highlighted the broader economic impact of the project. In addition to passenger services, the airport will attract fresh investments, boost tourism, and strengthen trade across the region.Efforts are also underway to improve seamless road connectivity from Visakhapatnam and surrounding cities, further integrating the airport into the regional transport network.

Following the successful test landing, officials expressed confidence that they will secure all regulatory clearances and final certifications in time for the mid-2026 commercial launch, marking a new phase in Andhra Pradesh’s aviation and economic growth.
