On the 29th of January, the farmers of Amaravati continued their protest against the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP.)
The farmers, who gave their lands to the former Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) Government for the development of Amaravati as the State’s capital, are protesting against the decision of the YSRCP to have 3 State capitals.
Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of A.P., who proposed three capitals for A.P., passed two bills regarding the decentralisation of the capitals. He also told the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) to begin the development work in Visakhapatnam, Kurnool and Amaravati, the cities proposed as the State’s capitals.
However, due to the decision of Shariff Mohammed Ahmed, the Chairman of the A.P., Legislative Council, to send the 2 bills to a select committee, the development work was halted for a while.
While the YSRCP Government is working to abolish the Legislative Council to initiate the development work, the farmers are continuing their protest against the proposal.
On the 29th of January, the Amaravati Joint Action Committee (JAC,) along with the farmers of Amaravati’s 29 villages, conducted a vehicle rally against Amaravati being made the State’s sole capital.
A large number of farmers and residents of Amaravati participated in the protest with their two wheelers, cars, tractors and other vehicles.
The rally would continue till late evening on the 29th of January, with the participation of opposition leaders in the State.
With this rally, the protests and dharnas by Amaravati’s farmers and the Amaravati JAC entered their 43rd day on the 29th of January.
