Traditional Jallikattu competition started in the Rangampet region of Tirupati, in Andhra Pradesh, on the 16th of January, Monday.
Jallikattu, the famous bull taming sport, also known as ‘Manju Virattu’ has been part of the Pongal celebrations of Tamil Nadu for ages and is celebrated in Andhra Pradesh also. The villages specially breed the bulls for the event, where many villagers take part and celebrate the event.
It is mainly the Temple bulls that take part in this event, continuing the bull baiting tradition among the ancient tribes that especially lived in the ‘Mullai’ region of the State. Emerging over time and evolving, it became a sport for showing off bravery and also for entertainment and winning prize money.
As part of the Jallikattu festival, young people competed to capture the flags tied to the horns of strong bulls. The event was attended by Mr. Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, the Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) and other local leaders.
In Andhra Pradesh, the Jallikattu event started on the 14th of January, Saturday. Earlier the competition was held in Anuppalle of Chandragiri constituency of Tirupati district in honour of the Bhogi festival. Now, the Rangampet region conducted the competition which was witnessed by a large number of people.
According to sources, in yesterday’s (Monday) competition, three people were injured while fighting the bulls.
Meanwhile, starting on the 14th of January in Andhra Pradesh, the Jallikattu event would continue for this week, till the 20th of January, Friday.
