Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the 29th of March, visited Andhra Pradesh and launched the campaign of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Modi addressed a public rally in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh and appealed to the citizens of Andhra Pradesh to vote for the BJP, to witness the rise of the State.

Highlighting the sanctioned projects for the development of the State, Mr. Modi said, the BJP led central Government has always stood for the State and ensured its development. However, the growth would have been doubled if the ruling Government of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had cooperated.

Mr. Modi said, “We have cleared permissions for Polavaram irrigation project, we have sanctioned a Central University to Anantapur. NIT, IIT, AIIMS; all these were sanctioned by this ‘chowkidar’ (guardian). It is the same ‘chowkidar’ who accorded the Vizag Railway Zone.” He further said, “I did my best but those in power have no intention to develop Andhra Pradesh.”

Targeting the N. Chandrababu Naidu led TDP, Mr. Modi called Naidu “U turn babu” and criticised him for leaving the National Democratic Alliance (NDA.)

Modi said, “People know what are the tricks being played and whose coffers are being filled. When your chowkidar raised questions and held him to account, ‘U-turn babu’ took U-turn from the promise of developing Andhra Pradesh and distanced himself from NDA. U-turn Babu found friends who are on ‘bail-gadi’ and treading the path where Pakistan is treating them as the hero.”

In 2018, during the Telangana Assembly elections, the TDP and the Indian National Congress (INC) formed an alliance to contest the Assembly elections.

Recently, though the TDP withdrew from the Telangana Lok Sabha elections, it announced, it will extend its support to the INC for the latter’s campaigns.

Andhra Pradesh will contest a total of 175 seats and 25 seats in the upcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha elections respectively. The elections in the State are scheduled on the 11th of April.

The major parties contesting the Andhra Pradesh Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP,) the JanaSena Party and the TDP.

The results of the Andhra Pradesh Lok Sabha and Assembly elections will be declared on the 23rd of May 2019.
