In a shocking drawback to the Indian National Congress, the former Party President Rahul Gandhi has been disqualified as the Lok Sabha Member.
On the 24th of March, Friday, the Lok Sabha secretariat issued a notification disqualifying Mr. Rahul Gandhi, who is facing criminal charges and has been convicted in a defamation case. Recently, a Surat Court convicted Mr. Rahul Gandhi and gave two years imprisonment in a 2019 defamation case. The former INC President was alleged for making derogatory remark against PM Narendra Modi over his surname. In a public meeting, three years back, Mr. Rahul Gandhi made a remark saying Modi surname people are thief.
Reacting to the comment, a BJP Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Gujarat filed a case against Rahul Gandhi. However, after trials and court hearings, recently on the 22nd of March, the Surat Court found Mr. Rahul Gandhi guilty and convicted with two years imprisonment.
After the verdict, the Lok Sabha Secretariat disqualified Mr. Rahul Gandhi as the Lok Sabha leader under the Article 110 (1) (e) of the Indian Constitution, Representation of the People Act 1951.
Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress express disappointment over the judgement and held a high level party meeting. In addition, many opposition leaders and anti Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders extended support to Rahul Gandhi and INC, calling PM Narendra Modi Government, a rule of dictatorship.
