On the 21st of May, the Supreme Court (SC) granted bail to the Member of Parliament (MP) of Andhra Pradesh Raghu Ramakrishna Raju.

The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) MP was arrested in a sedition case.  ecently, on the 14th of May, the MP of the YSRCP was arrested in a sedition case. He called out to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and demanded a cancellation of bail against the YSRCP Chief Y.S Jagan Mohan Reddy.

 

Mr. Raju was arrested from his residence in Hyderabad for allegedly acting in a way detrimental to the prestige of the state government. He was registered under Sections 124A (sedition), 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups), and 505 (conducting public mischief.)

He appealed for bail in the Supreme, after being rejected from the Andhra Pradesh High Court.  On the 17th of May, the Supreme Court heard the bail plea of Mr. Raghu Ramakrishna Raju and ordered fresh medical examination.   The Court postponed the matter to the next hearing, scheduled for the 21st of May.

In today’s hearing, the Supreme Court examined the reports provided by the Hyderabad labs and said, “It is of prima facie opinion that Raju was ill-treated in police custody.”  The Supreme Court also asked the YSRCP MP not to interact with electronic or print media with regard to the case.  According to the medical report of the YSRCP MP had injuries such as a fracture to his toe.

The Apex Court also said, the allegations of lawyer of K. Raghurama Krishna Raju is accurate and he must have been tortured in the Police Custody.  The SC bench said, “In our view, considering the injuries as reported by medical board of army hospital, we can prima facie form an opinion that petitioner was ill treated while in police custody.”  However, the Andhra Pradesh Police denied the allegations and said, the accused have injured himself.

The Court further said, “Charges against the petitioner [Raju] are not such that custodial interrogation would be required. Considering the totality of the plea and the health condition of the petitioner since he has undergone open heart surgery, we deem it fit that petitioner be enlarged on bail.”

With this, the SC adjourned the Court hearing in the Raghurama Krishna Raju case.
