Severe coastal weather events frequently impact coastal communities across Southern India during seasonal transitions, causing heavy rains, disruptions, and strong ocean winds. Authorities regularly monitor atmospheric patterns to issue timely warnings, ensuring safety and minimizing potential damage to vulnerable regional infrastructure.
Cyclone Murasu officially crossed the south Andhra Pradesh coast near Ongole in the early hours of Tuesday, bringing powerful wind speeds reaching 100 to 110 kmph, with gusts up to 120 kmph. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the severe storm made landfall between Nellore and Narsapur while moving north-northwestward at 9 kmph.
Managing Director of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), Prakhar Jain, warned that isolated heavy rainfall is expected across West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Markapuram, Prakasam, and Nellore districts.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) and Real Time Governance Society (RTGS) have urged residents to remain extremely vigilant as strong winds and intense rain continue to affect the region following the storm’s passage.
