M. Srinivasa Rao, a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader, on the 14th of February, quit the Party and joined the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP.)

Srinivas was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Anakapalli constituency and was a part of the Lok Sabha. He submitted his resignation to Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan and also resigned from the post of MP.

The reason to quit the Party was said to be Srinivas’s disappointment with N. Chandrababu Naidu, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (AP,) over the decision of an alliance with the Indian National Congress (INC.)

Srinivasa also spoke about the corruption in the TDP, which was also noticed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as one of the reasons to quit the TDP ahead of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections.

Srinivasa addressed the media on the 14th of February and said, “For the past one and half years, we have been protesting both inside the Parliament and outside for Special Status, but the Centre didn’t show any mercy. I then suggested to Chandrababu Naidu that all our MPs should resign en masse like the YSRCP MPs, in protest against the Centre. However, he didn’t pay heed to my advice (sic.)”

Srinivas also slammed Naidu for his protest against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to acquire the Special Category Status (SCS) for Andhra Pradesh. He said, Naidu is now trusting the INC and formed an alliance with it to get the SCS and slammed the BJP for doing injustice to AP.

Srinivas also criticised Naidu’s action in 2014, when the latter formed an alliance with the BJP, stating the INC is doing injustice to the State and the BJP will grant the SCS to the State. Srinivas mocked Naidu and said, “He thinks that people will believe whatever he says.”

On the 14th of February, Mr. Srinivas also met Jagan Mohan Reddy, the President of YSRCP, at the latter’s residence in Hyderabad.

N. Chandrababu Naidu, during a telephonic conference, alerted the Party about the likelihood of Srinivasa exiting the Party.

The resignation of M. Srinivasa will be a major setback for the TDP ahead of the Lok Sabha and the Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections.

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections are scheduled between April and May 2019, along with the Lok Sabha elections. The State will contest 175 Assembly seats and 25 Lok Sabha seats and the major parties competing are the TDP, the YSRCP and the JanaSena Party.
