In a major relief for toddy tappers in the Telugu State of Telangana, the K Chandrashekar Rao led Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) Government announced a scheme.
On the 2nd of May, Tuesday, Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana announced ‘Geetha Karmikula Bhima’ (Insurance for Toddy Tappers.) The scheme has been introduced on the lines of Rythu Bhima to the farmers.
Under this new scheme for toddy tappers, the BRS Government would provide an insurance money of Rs. 5 lakhs, deposited directly in the bank account of the family members. The money would be given to the family in case any toddy tapper dies accidentally while collecting toddy from palm trees in the fields.
Furthermore, Mr. K. Chandrashekar Rao instructed Mr. T. Harish Rao, the State Finance Minister and Mr. V. Srinivas Rao Goud, the Excise and Prohibition Minister, to prepare guidelines for the new insurance scheme.
The decision to implement the insurance scheme for toddy tappers was taken during a review meeting, chaired by KCR, at the new Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Secretariat. Concerned about the accidents and deaths of toddy tappers in the State, the BRS President and Telangana CM decided to announce the Rs 5 lakh insurance scheme. He also asked the Finance Ministry to ensure the money in such cases are given to the family members in just one week, without any delays.
The scheme would bring some relief to the family members of toddy tappers, who die while collecting toddy from trees, providing them some financial stability after the death of their breadwinners.
