Visakhapatnam Railway Station Turns 130, Expansion to 14 Platforms Planned

Visakhapatnam Railway Station in Andhra Pradesh has completed 130 years and is set for further expansion. The station, which started in 1896 with two platforms and around 200 daily passengers, now handles more than 65,000 passengers every day.

The station currently has eight platforms. South Coast Railway General Manager Sandeep Mathur said plans are underway to expand it to 14 platforms. The project aims to create a modern transport centre with better facilities and improved links with other modes of transport.

The 130th anniversary was marked with a Station Mahotsav and cultural events. A historical photo exhibition displayed old photographs, railway items and other heritage pieces.

A coffee-table book, ‘Waltair Visakhapatnam’, was also released to document the station’s long history and major railway milestones.
