Vizag Gas Leak – Residents 4 Km Away Moved After Late Night Gas Emission Again

After the tragic incident of Visakhapatnam gas leak, the residents of nearby areas again  smelt of the gas emission late night on the 7th of May.

On the 7th of May, a chemical gas leaked from LG Polymers in Visakhapatnam, which killed 11 people and left thousands with health issues.  While 236 were admitted to the hospital, 70 were reported unconscious and 20 are on ventilators.

After the precautionary measures and rescue operations, residents said fumes were seen billowing out of the chemical plant, where the gas leakage happened.

People from Gopalpatnam, Simhachalam and Pinagadi areas, which is 4 km from the plant were also moved after they complained of chemical smell.

The panic due to the gas leakage late Thursday (the 7th of May,) forced people to vacate their houses and move to the shelter places organised by the State Government.

When asked about the gas leakage again, officials said the gas emission was continuing since the major leakage took place around 3: 45 A.M., on the 7th of May.

R.K., Meena, the Commissioner of Visakhapatnam Police, said there was no need for panic. “Efforts are going on to neutralize the gas leak.  There is no danger.” 

Approximately 12,000 people from RR Venkatapuram and four other villages were evacuated after the leakage started again in the late night on the 7th of May.

Sandeep Anand, the Visakhapatnam District Fire Officer said 10 fire engines and two foam fighters were kept ready at the plant.  He said some ambulances were also on standby as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, a cargo flight carrying a team of experts and PTBC inhibitor, an antidote for the Styrene gas, landed in Visakhapatnam late Thursday.

The experts in chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) disasters are likely to begin the operation to plug the emissions after assessing the situation at the plant.

Meanwhile, Visakhapatnam Police registered a case against the LG Polymers, a South Korean company situated in Visakhapatnam, responsible for the tragic incident.
