YS Jagan Mohan Reddy Seeks Central Government’s Help For Stranded Fishermen In Gujarat

Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) to bring back stranded fishermen in Gujarat.

Approximately 6,000 fishermen from Andhra Pradesh are stranded in Gujarat due to the nationwide lockdown in the wake of the spread of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19.

In regard to this, Jagan Mohan Reddy, on the 26th of April, spoke to Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister of India  and urged the Central Government’s help to bring the fishermen back.

Mr. Reddy said, “I informed her (Nirmala Sitharaman) that senior IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer Satish Chandra is coordinating with officials from Gujarat for the safe return of the fishermen.  Responding positively, she assured me that they will be brought back at the earliest, and designated an official from her ministry for the task.”

The previous day, 26th of April, Rahul Gandhi, the former President of the Indian National Congress (INC,) raised the matter and sought help for the Telugu fishermen stuck in Gujarat.  Mr. Gandhi said, “Over 6,000 fishermen from AP, stranded in Gujarat, have been confined to their tiny fishing trawlers for over a month, in unhygienic conditions with limited food and water. I appeal to the government to move my brothers to relief camps and ensure their well being.”

Jagan Mohan Reddy also conducted a review meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discussed the spread of the virus in Andhra Pradesh, containment zones and precautionary measures.

Andhra Pradesh reported a total of 1,097 cases of the Novel Coronavirus with 31 deaths till date.  The highest number of COVID-19 infections were registered in Kurnool, followed by Guntur.
