Nellore: The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has accused the TDP-led coalition of monopolizing Andhra Pradesh’s liquor industry, claiming that 90% of wine shops allocated through the lottery system were awarded to TDP leaders and their associates. The YSRCP alleges that the process was manipulated to benefit the party’s leadership and supporters.
At a media briefing in Nellore, former minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy stated that a powerful liquor syndicate, controlled by TDP, is dominating the industry. He further claimed that this influence extends to other key sectors like sand, education, healthcare, and gravel. “Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is using these resources for personal and political gain,” Reddy said, criticizing the liquor policy for benefiting TDP leaders.
Reddy also expressed concern over the rise of low-quality liquor, sold cheaply by these syndicates, while premium brands are priced higher. He highlighted the growing number of illegal outlets, or belt shops, and warned that home delivery of liquor could soon follow, worsening the situation.
At a separate press conference in Vishakapatnam, former minister Gudivada Amarnath criticized the TDP for reversing the progress made under YSRCP’s rule, when 43,000 belt shops were closed, and the number of wine shops was reduced. He demanded an immediate repeal of the liquor policy, warning of widespread public protests if the government fails to act.
