On the 4th of April, the Taliban carried out a massive attack in Western Afghanistan, which killed 30 soldiers and police officers.

According to Abdul Waris Shirzad, the District Governor of Afghanistan, hundreds of Taliban men barged into the center of Bala Murghab district in Badghis, during the early hours of the day.

With regard to the possibility of the situation getting out of hand, Shirzad issued a statement in which he said, “No one is hearing our voice; no reinforcements arrived yet. If the Government does not send more forces, there will be a disaster in the district.”

Starting during the Spring season, the fight between the Islamic State and the Taliban kept growing with intensity and reached an all time high on the night of the 3rd of April. According to officials in Afghanistan, unless reinforcements are sent immediately, the entire hillside area is extremely vulnerable.

Furthermore, the United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said, more than 3,000 families fled from the war ridden area. As the two sides are mobilizing their forces, living in the area is going to be extremely difficult for the civilians. The fighting forced people to move out of three major villages, Digal, Korangal and Manar, in the Chapa Dara district.

The Taliban also lost over 30 men and captured several key security checkpoints. Responding to this capture, Afghanistan tweeted saying, they chose to tactically retreat their forces from the checkpoints to avoid any civilian casualties. In an attempt to weaken the Taliban, the Defence Ministry of the Country said, it called several airstrikes on the major Taliban positions.

In March 2018, as a result of the fight between the Islamic State and the Taliban, close to 21,000 families were forced to move out from the conflict ridden areas.

Stay tuned for more updates.
