Amid the second wave of the Wuhan virus and possible third wave, the slow vaccination process by private centres is a concern for the Central Government.

On the 14th of July, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) expressed concern and alerted states and union territories (UTs.)

According to sources, a total of 15 states and UTs were alerted regarding the slow pace of vaccination, despite ample amount of vaccine doses. The concerns of “serious worry” were expressed during a meeting with the representatives of 15 states and UTs, held on the 14th of July. Rajesh Bhushan, the Health Secretary of the Union Health Ministry chaired the meeting. After the meeting, a statement was released to the states and UTs which read, “Highlighting the slow pace of vaccination through the PCVCs, States were advised to review status and progress on vaccine procurement by PCVCs on a daily basis. They were advised to ensure speedy and effective coordination between the PCVCs and the vaccine manufacturers to remove bottlenecks, if any. It was pointed out that advance visibility of the COVID-19 vaccines to the States by the Union Health Ministry is in turn required to be communicated to the citizens by States.”

The meeting was attended by health secretaries of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana along with nodal officers from Bharat Biotech and the Serum Institute of India.

Besides the slow pace vaccination process, the Union Health Ministry also discussed faulty payments, delay in payments from private centres, not ordering allocated amounts of doses and vaccine wastage during the meeting.

Currently, India is providing four COVID-19 vaccines, of the four two are India made, one is Russian vaccine manufactured in India and one is the United States’s vaccine which is imported.
