The Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi Government on the 15th of April, announced a weekend curfew in the Union Territory. The decision was taken in the wake of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 cases rise. 

Since the past few weeks, Delhi has been witnessing a massive spike in the daily cases. To control the spread of the virus and to enhance recovery rates, the Aam Aadmi President and the Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal conducted a meeting. Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and top officials attended the meeting, held on the morning of the 15th of April.

During the meeting, Mr. Arvind Kejriwal announced the lockdown/curfew and said this would break the chain of transmission.

Arvind Kejriwal said, “Break the chain of transmission.” During the imposed curfew, essential activities like weddings planned ahead, cinema theatres with 30 % working capacity and other emergency services would be open. On the other hand, places like auditoriums, malls, gyms, spas and others would remain shut. Highlighting the food risks eating out would be banned and only home deliveries will be allowed. Weekly markets would be allowed but with restrictions.

Arvind Kejriwal said, “These restrictions are for your sake, for you and you families. It will be inconvenient but these restrictions are necessary to break the chain of transmission,” He added, “Don’t panic. All essential services will be available through the weekend.”

The weekend curfew would begin on Fridays at 10:00 P.M., till 6:00 A.M., on Mondays.

Meanwhile, in the past 24 hours, Delhi reported 17,282 fresh cases of COVID-19. This was the highest single day spike of the Coronavirus since the pandemic started. In addition, Delhi’s rate of people testing positive has climbed to nearly 16 % from the previous 12.4 %.

Meanwhile, to increase the number of beds for COVID-19 patients, the Delhi Government added banquet halls, schools and sports complexes to have hospital beds to ramp up beds for treatment. Due to the highest number of cases, the Delhi Medical Department is suffering a scarcity of beds for treating COVID-19 patients.

With this, there are 50,736 active cases so far in Delhi.
