The southern state of Kerala reported the highest single day spike with over 46,000 cases of the Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)
This is the first time since 2021 May that the State registered the highest number, over 45,000. The State tested 1,15,357 samples in the last 24 hours.
On the evening of the 20th of January, Thursday, the Kerala Health Department confirmed 46,387 new cases, 15,388 recoveries and 32 deaths due to the Wuhan virus. With the fresh 46,387 cases, the active cases reached close to 2 lakh in Kerala, as it is at 1,99,041. Of the fresh cases, Thiruvananthapuram saw 9,720 new cases, Ernakulam 9,605 and Kozhikode 4,016.
Besides 1,99,041 active cases, Kerala has 51,501 deceased cases and is expected to increase in the coming days.
According to Veena George, the Health Minister of Kerala, the State is witnessing the third wave of the Wuhan virus with the contribution of its new variants Omicron and Delta. Notably, considering the COVID-19 figures, Kerala is the worst COVID-19 affected region with a maximum number of single day spikes.
Despite rising COVID-19 cases, no decision was taken to close down malls, tourism centers, but to ensure COVID-19 protocol and effective crowd management. In addition, work from home would be allowed for feeding mothers and chronic patients, employed in both government and private sectors.
