After the falling number of Black Fungus infections in Telangana, the State Government decided to deregulate the drugs used in the treatment of Mucormycosis ( Black Fungus.) The Black Fungus infection is a major side effect after recovering from the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. It is a threat to the ones who recovered from the deadly Wuhan virus. The major reason behind these side effects are the usage of steroid drugs to cure those infected with the Wuhan virus. The steroids help with the breathing difficulty, however the same steroids make the body susceptible to the fungus, which is already in the soil and can be airborne.

The decision was taken considering the current situation of Black Fungus in the State as per the guidance of the Central Government.

Recently, the Government of India (GoI,) informed states and union territories (UTs) to discontinue allocation of anti-Mucormycosis drug, Liposomal Amphotericin B. Initially, due to the black marketing issues and other scarcity of drugs for Black Fungus, the Central Government decided to allocate the useful drugs (Liposomal Amphotericin) to the states and UTs. However, with the falling number of cases, they asked the State and UT governments to procure the necessary drugs from manufacturers.

Acting upon the same, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) deregulated the allotment of the injection and drug use for the treatment. In regard to supervising the allocation process, the TRS Government formed a committee, which regulates the drugs allotment.

In Telangana, besides Liposomal Amphotericin B, Posaconazole and Isavuconazole, were the other drugs also allocated to hospitals.

The Telangana Health Department released a statement regarding the same. The statement read, “The Government hereby deregulates the allotment of Liposomal Amphotericin B injection drug through the Committee.” It is to be noted, the committee and the Telangana Government deregulated Posaconazole, Amphotericin (conventional/emulsion) and Isavuconazole in June.

With the deregulation of the anti Black Fungus drugs, the hospitals treating Black Fungus patients would now be able to procure drugs directly, with informing or requesting the committee for the same.

Meanwhile, in a recently released survey of the Union Government, Telangana was in the 7th position to have a maximum number of Black Fungus cases.
