Due to the continuous rise in the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 cases, the Telangana Government decided to stop the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
However, considering the worsening situation of COVID-19 in the State, the committee pertaining to the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, conducted a series of meetings. The decision was taken after one such meeting with the Chief Secretary of Telangana, Somesh Kumar. He reviewed the current COVID-19 situation and COVID-19 safety measures. Mr. Somesh Kumar also met with the district officials and Health Department staff of Telangana to discuss the same.
The announcement regarding the halting of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav was made by K.V. Ramanachary, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and the head of the committee. He said, “In (the) view of the widespread of (the) Novel Coronavirus in the State, it is decided to stop the celebrations until further orders.”
On the 15th of August 2022, India would complete 75 years of Independence. To celebrate this occasion, the Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, decided to celebrate the grand ustav (festival) for 75 weeks. The 75 weeks celebration started from the 12th of March in several regions of Telangana. In regard to the celebration, the TRS Government allocated Rs. 25 crores for the celebrations. The celebration would be a part of the Nation wide ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ initiated by the Union Government.
The 75 week long festivities included patriotic programmes like essay writing competitions, poetry conventions, elocution competition, painting competitions, etc., organised at various levels till 2022.
However, due to the COVID-19 situation, the State Government had to halt the events and celebrations.
