The diva and the director of Bollywood who gave friendship goals to everyone may now turn out to be bitter ex-best friends. Karan Johar and Kajol have seemingly called quits to their 25 year long friendship as rumours weigh down on the strained relationship.
The news started making rounds on Twitter when a person with the handle as @friends_rachel6 put out supposed excerpts from Karan Johar’s autobiography – An Unsuitable Boy. These excerpts show Karan writing about his apparent split with his first ever heroine, Kajol. The two met on the sets of “Dilwale Dulhaniya Lejayenge” when Karan was just an Assistant Director and had a small character in the film. When he went on to make his own directorial debut with “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” he picked Kajol as his leading lady and since then the two were buddies. In fact, Karan also mentioned Kajol to be his lucky charm and is seen doing a cameo or major part in many of his films. Even when he started his television chat show “Koffee With Karan,” there was Kajol, on the couch starting what is now the most controversial and candid talk show on Indian television.
Maybe it was that the river had run its course or that the two souls drifted in different directions, but there began rumours of the two not gelling as they were before. Kajol’s husband, Ajay Devgan, especially never saw eye to eye. There was always a scent of stiffness between them and perhaps Kajol finally broke down and supported her man. But the real problem came when Karan Johar’s “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” and Ajay Devgn’s “Shivaay” clashed at the box office. Although it is usual for big budget films to release on the same dates, what Ajay couldn’t digest was the buzz that Karan had employed cheap means of using the infamous Kamal R. Khan (KRK) to defame his movie.
Obviously Karan Johar denied it later although he remained stoic then, but the first crack had appeared. Ajay even went on to say publicly later that Kajol was not her warmest with her first time director. “I am not friends with him (Karan.) Even Kajol’s equation is not as warm as it was. It is a personal issue… not due to any professional thing. It’s a personal hurtful feeling. It has nothing to do with the clash,” Ajay said at the time. When asked about the reason, Ajay said, “I would not like to talk about it.”
Seems like the silence of Kajol meant like a seal of mistrust and Karan has supposedly lashed out in his autobiography that he has penned with a co-author Poonam Saxena. Penguin Books India, who are publishing the book, have kept mum about it as has Karan Johar. So it is yet to be official that this break up is true but for the sake of our old time memories we hope that KJo and Kaj are able to bury the hatchet!
