Tamil cinema had a strong presence at the 72nd National Film Awards, with several films and artists receiving top honours. The awards were presented by President Droupadi Murmu on September 22, 2026, at Ekta Nagar, Gujarat. The winners had been announced earlier on July 18.
Raayan, directed by Dhanush and produced by Sun TV Network Limited, won the Best Tamil Film award.
Amaran was among the biggest Tamil winners. Rajkumar Periasamy won Best Direction for the film, while R. Kalaivannan won Best Editing. G. V. Prakash Kumar also received the Best Music Direction award for the film’s background music.
Captain Miller, directed by Arun Matheswaran and produced by Sathya Jyothi Films, won Best Feature Film Promoting National, Social and Environmental Values. Dhanush also received a Special Mention for his performance in the film.
Maharaja won two honours. Sachana Namidass received Best Actress in a Supporting Role, while Anl Arasu won Best Action Direction for the film.
Meiyazhagan received a Special Mention for Suren G., its Film Sound Mix Engineer. Blue, a Tamil non-feature film, won Best Sound Design for T. S. Hari Hara Sudhan.
