The Chennai city traffic police are trying to keep pace with the Digital India movement. Hereafter, the traffic police will allow the violators to pay fines through debit or credit card. On Wednesday, hundred Point of Sale (PoS) machines were distributed to the traffic police to be put to immediate use.
As per the reports, a motorist was caught violating the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act (1988) and the person was stopped by the police. The police used hand held machines for spot fining. There are few types of violations for which a minimum Rs.100 is levied. Personnel who hold the rank of sub inspectors (Traffic) or above have been authorized to use the machines for which training is been given to them.
“Three receipts will be generated for the rider, the officer and headquarters. The fine amount will be directly deposited in the road safety fund of the Transport department,” a police officer said to a popular news channel.
A senior police officer strongly believes that this move will change public’s perception of the traffic police. Many citizens have a negative impression about the traffic police team as they were stopped and asked to pay fine without getting a receipt.
Previous year, the traffic police claim to have collected Rs. 25 crores as the fine amount from the traffic violators. This year, until the month of July, Rs.12 crores has been collected.
