Folk Sensation Maithili Thakur Makes Electoral Debut, Becomes Youngest MLA in Bihar

In a standout moment from the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, folk singer-turned-politician Maithili Thakur secured a clear victory in the Alinagar constituency under the banner of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), becoming the youngest MLA in Bihar’s history at just 25 years of age.

Thakur clinched the seat by amassing over 84,915 votes, surpassing veteran Binod Mishra of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) by more than 11,000 votes. Her win also saw the BJP capture Alinagar for the first time since its creation in 2008, signalling a major shift in the region’s political landscape.

A native of Madhubani, Maithili Thakur rose to fame with her soulful renditions of Maithili and Bhojpuri folk music, along with significant digital popularity on platforms such as YouTube. Many observers viewed her entry into active politics earlier this year as the BJP’s strategy to introduce fresh, youth-oriented faces and cultural credibility into the electoral contest.

Speaking after the counting, Thakur described the result as “like a dream” and pledged to serve the people of Alinagar with dedication, calling herself “their daughter” and emphasising her commitment to turn aspirations into action.

Observers believe the victory underscores a wider trend: the convergence of regional identity, youth appeal, and mainstream party backing. In an age where performance and persona matter as much as policy, Maithili Thakur’s win may mark the beginning of a new chapter in Bihar politics. For Alinagar’s electorate, her entry brings both the promise of recognition and the expectation of diligent representation.
