New Delhi: Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, aged 92, passed away at AIIMS, Delhi, on Thursday night due to illness. Known for his soft-spoken demeanor and extraordinary intellect, Dr. Singh was a celebrated economist and the architect of India’s economic reforms.

Dr. Singh’s illustrious career spanned over three decades in Parliament, during which he laid the foundation for India’s economic strength. As the Finance Minister under late Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, he introduced the LPG (Liberalization, Privatization, and Globalization) reforms, steering the nation through a financial crisis. Later, he served as Prime Minister for two terms (2004-2014), during which India achieved its highest GDP growth of 10.8%.

Born in 1932, Dr. Singh was an academician before entering politics, teaching at Punjab University and Delhi School of Economics. He held significant positions, including RBI Governor, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, and UGC Chairman. His tenure as Prime Minister saw landmark reforms like the Right to Information Act (2005) and the Employment Guarantee Scheme.
