Fresh Snow Brings Major Disruption to Kashmir’s Transport Network
Srinagar, January 27, 2026 — A fresh spell of heavy snowfall across Jammu & Kashmir has brought significant disruption to both air and road travel in the region, officials confirmed on Tuesday. Persistent snow and poor visibility forced authorities to halt services and implement safety measures as winter conditions intensified.
Heavy snowfall disrupted operations at Srinagar International Airport, forcing authorities to cancel at least 25 flights due to snow-covered runways and poor visibility. Airlines including IndiGo and Air India suspended services in the interest of passenger safety, and additional delays in scheduled flights remain likely as weather conditions persist. Authorities advised passengers to stay in touch with their respective airlines for real-time updates and alternative travel arrangements.
Traffic authorities closed the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), the region’s crucial all-weather link, after heavy snow accumulation near the Navyug Tunnel made travel unsafe. Officials confirmed that vehicles will not be allowed to move in either direction until conditions improve and the route is declared safe. Other mountain routes such as the Mughal Road, SSG Road, and Sinthan Road also remain shut.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued light to moderate snowfall and gusty winds through mid-week, urging residents and travellers to exercise caution. In addition to transportation disruptions, authorities have warned of heightened avalanche risks in higher reaches of the region and advised people to avoid unnecessary travel in exposed areas.
As temperatures remained near freezing and winter conditions peaked, the fresh snowfall disrupted travel but also promised to replenish water resources, offering relief to local communities after weeks of intense cold.
