PM Modi Pays Tribute to 1971 War Heroes on Vijay Diwas
New Delhi — On the 54th anniversary of Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers of the 1971 India-Pakistan War, underscoring their courage, sacrifice and enduring legacy for the nation. Celebrated every year on 16 December, Vijay Diwas honours the decisive military victory that led to the liberation of Bangladesh and remains one of India’s most significant chapters in modern history.

In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister said the unwavering resolve and selfless service of Indian armed forces not only secured a historic victory but also “etched a moment of pride in our history.” He emphasized that the valor displayed by the soldiers continues to inspire present and future generations of Indians.
Vijay Diwas commemorates the conclusion of the 13-day war in 1971, when Indian forces played a defining role in compelling the surrender of over 93,000 Pakistani troops in Dhaka, leading to the birth of Bangladesh. Observances across the country include wreath-laying ceremonies, tributes by political and military leaders, and remembrance programs highlighting the courage of those who fought.
President Droupadi Murmu also paid homage to the fallen heroes, lauding their indomitable spirit and supreme sacrifice for the nation’s sovereignty. She called their contributions a lasting source of national pride.
As India reflects on Vijay Diwas, leaders and citizens alike reaffirm their gratitude to the armed forces — men and women whose dedication and valor helped shape the nation’s destiny.
