In a significant development in Telangana’s political arena, the Chairman of the Telangana Legislative Council, Gutha Sukhender Reddy, has formally accepted the resignation of Kalvakuntla Kavitha as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from the Nizamabad Local Authorities constituency. An official notification issued by the Council Secretary confirmed the acceptance with effect from January 6, 2026, formally ending her tenure in the Upper House.

Kavitha, a former Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader and daughter of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), had initially tendered her resignation on September 3, 2025, following her suspension from the party amid internal disagreements. Her resignation remained pending acceptance for months until she personally appealed to the Council Chair during a session earlier this week.
During her final address to the Council, Kavitha became visibly emotional and levelled sharp criticisms against the BRS leadership, alleging internal suppression and questioning the party’s constitution. She reaffirmed her commitment to a new political journey under the banner of Telangana Jagruthi, which she leads and plans to transform into a full-fledged political party.
With Kavitha’s resignation now officially accepted, the Nizamabad MLC seat is vacant, paving the way for a potential by-election. Political observers believe this change could reshape local political dynamics, especially with Kavitha planning a renewed push in state politics.
The development marks a notable pivot in Telangana’s political landscape, as one of its high-profile leaders moves away from a mainstream party to chart an independent course.
