Chancellor Merz, on his first official visit to India, joined Prime Minister Modi to inaugurate the three-day kite festival, which celebrates the spirit of Uttarayan—the joyous kite flying tradition before Sankranti. PM Modi and Chancellor Merz flew a kite featuring Lord Hanuman, reflecting cultural pride and their warm camaraderie.

Earlier in the day, the German leader paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi at the historic Sabarmati Ashram with PM Modi, reflecting on Gandhi’s enduring legacy and its resonance in Indo-German relations. Following the cultural engagement, both leaders interacted with kite artisans, learning about the craft and appreciating its significance in Gujarat’s heritage.

The International Kite Festival attracted enthusiasts from around 50 countries, featuring hundreds of international and Indian kite flyers showcasing dazzling airborne displays.

Beyond this festive celebration, Chancellor Merz’s visit focuses on strengthening the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, marking 25 years of collaboration. Talks are slated to cover a breadth of issues including trade, technology, education, sustainable development, and defence cooperation.

As Gujarat’s skies brimmed with colorful kites, the event not only echoed tradition but also highlighted how cultural diplomacy can uplift global partnerships amid an evolving geopolitical landscape.
