Officials have reported the heavy rains from the monsoon caused a huge landslide that has killed at least 40 people among which three are reported to soldiers.
Bangladesh is subjected to the heaviest rains they’ve had in years. In the Chittagong hills dozens have been reported missing.
Officials explained that the rescue mission is being hindered by the bad weather. Officials also fear at this rate the death toll will keep rising.
In some of the areas that have been affected the worst, telecommunication links and electricity has been cut off. Head of Disaster Management, Reaz Ahmed said, “We have not been able to reach many of the affected places.”
He also added, “Once the rains are over, we’ll get a full picture of the damage and get the recovery work in full swing.”
Bangladesh’s major port city, Chittagong has been disrupted due to the heavy rains.
In May, Cyclone Mora hit the southeast of Bangladesh killing around 8 people and destroying thousands of homes.
The last major landslide in Chittagong was in 2007 monsoon killing 130 people.
