Sayantan Basu, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP,) drew a lot of criticism, after he promoted violence, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal (WB.)

Sayantan Basu, on the 26th of March, addressed a Party meeting in Basirhat and said, “If goons try to capture booths on polling day, I will tell the CRPF that their bullets must go through the heart and not at the feet. This is a fight to save democracy.”

He also directed the BJP workers to hit back and shoot at anyone who tries to attack any of the BJP members during the polls.

Mr. Basu even asked women to sharpen their knives and keep them ready to use.

Basu drew criticism from the opposition Parties for spreading such violent messages among the people and the Party workers in West Bengal.

Jyotipriyo Mullick, a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC,) angered by the comments, asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take the necessary step against Basu.

The TMC also alleged K.K. Sharma, the Central Police Observer in charge of the security during the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal, of being involved with the BJP.

To prove their statement, the TMC said, they had photographs of K.K.Sharma attending the functions organised by the BJP.
