Curfew and Internet Ban Enforced in Manipur After Violent Arson in Ukhrul
Manipur’s Ukhrul district has once again witnessed a surge in violence, leading the state administration to impose a strict curfew and suspend internet services for several days to curb unrest and prevent misinformation.
The trouble began over the weekend in the Litan and Litan Sareikhong areas, where tensions between the Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities boiled over following an alleged assault incident that sparked clashes. Despite initial efforts at a customary reconciliation, the situation deteriorated late Monday night when armed miscreants reportedly torched more than 20 homes across the villages, forcing many families to flee with their belongings.

Eyewitnesses and officials described scenes of arson and sporadic gunfire, with some residents fleeing to neighbouring areas for safety. In response to the spiralling unrest, the Manipur government not only imposed a curfew under relevant security provisions but also ordered a five-day suspension of internet services across the district. Authorities say this step is essential to prevent the spread of rumours and inflammatory content that could further aggravate tensions.
Security forces, including state police and central paramilitary units, have moved into sensitive pockets to restore order. A joint control room at Litan Police Station is coordinating the response, while senior officers are on the ground closely monitoring developments. Additional patrols and checkpoints have been established to restrict movement and ensure public safety.
The administration has appealed to communities to exercise restraint and allow peace efforts to prevail, even as the district remains on high alert.
