Legendary Sculptor Ram V. Sutar Passes Away at 100, Leaving an Unforgettable Legacy
Renowned Indian sculptor Ram Vanji Sutar, the visionary artist behind some of the country’s most iconic monumental sculptures, passed away on December 17, 2025, at his residence in Noida. He was 100 years old and had been battling age-related health issues, his family confirmed.

Born on 19 February 1925 in Gondur village, Dhule district, Maharashtra, Sutar’s passion for art took root in his youth. A gold medallist from the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Art and Architecture, Mumbai, he went on to shape India’s landscape with timeless sculptures that reflect the nation’s history and pride.
Ram Vanji Sutar created the 182-metre Statue of Unity in Gujarat, the world’s tallest statue, as a tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. monumental tribute stands as a testament to both his artistic genius and technical mastery.
Over a distinguished career spanning more than seven decades, Sutar also created several notable public sculptures, including the meditative statue of Mahatma Gandhi and the equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj near the Parliament House. His works blend artistic realism with deep cultural resonance, earning him admiration across India and abroad.
A recipient of India’s highest civilian honours — Padma Shri (1999) and Padma Bhushan (2016) — Sutar was also recently conferred the Maharashtra Bhushan, the state’s top civilian award, in recognition of his lifelong contribution to art and heritage.
Leaders and art lovers alike have mourned his passing, calling it an “irreparable loss” to Indian culture and public art. Sutar’s monumental creations will continue to inspire generations, standing as enduring symbols of creativity, history and national pride.
