India Welcomes New Phase in Dhaka — Modi Congratulates Tarique Rahman on BNP Victory
India on Friday warmly congratulated Tarique Rahman after his Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) claimed a sweeping victory in Bangladesh’s 2026 parliamentary elections, a result that signals a major political transition in the neighbouring country.

In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his “warm congratulations” to Rahman for leading his party to a decisive win, saying it reflects the confidence of the Bangladeshi people in his leadership. Modi reaffirmed that India will continue to support a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh and expressed eagerness to work closely with the new leadership to deepen cooperation across sectors.
The election held on February 12, 2026, stands out as one of the most competitive contests in recent years and follows major political upheaval in Bangladesh, including the 2024 uprising that brought an end to nearly 15 years of Awami League rule. Early results indicate that the BNP will form the next government with a strong parliamentary majority, positioning Tarique Rahman to assume office as prime minister after returning from nearly two decades in exile.
India’s congratulatory message comes alongside positive signals from other world capitals, including Pakistan and the United States, which also welcomed the election outcome and signalled readiness to engage with Bangladesh’s new leadership.
Analysts say New Delhi’s prompt acknowledgment underscores the strategic importance of Bangladesh to India’s regional diplomacy and reflects optimism that longstanding bilateral ties — including economic cooperation, connectivity, and cultural bonds — will strengthen under the new government.
