Modi Congratulates Japan’s Sanae Takaichi After Sweeping Election Win
New Delhi / Tokyo — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday warmly congratulated Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on her commanding victory in the early general elections, calling it a “landmark mandate” and expressing confidence that India-Japan ties will reach new heights under her leadership. Takaichi’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) secured a resounding victory in the February 8 snap elections for the House of Representatives, winning a commanding two-thirds majority — one of the strongest mandates in Japan’s post-war political history.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Modi said, “Congratulations, Sanae Takaichi, on your landmark victory… Our Special Strategic and Global Partnership plays a vital role in enhancing global peace, stability and prosperity.”, underscoring the long-standing partnership between the two democracies.
The landslide victory gives Takaichi’s government greater legislative power to pursue key policy priorities — including tax reforms, defence strengthening, and initiatives aimed at reviving economic growth. Exit polls and preliminary counts showed the LDP comfortably crossing the 233-seat threshold needed for a simple majority in the 465-member lower house, with its coalition allies likely pushing their combined tally even higher.
Political analysts say the result reflects broad public support for Takaichi’s leadership and policy agenda, including plans to bolster national security and deepen strategic ties with allies such as the United States and India.
For New Delhi, the outcome boosts momentum in diplomatic cooperation — especially in areas such as economic security, technology, defence, and supply-chain resilience — elements that have defined the India-Japan special strategic partnership in recent years.
As celebrations continue in Tokyo, the global community watches closely how Takaichi’s strengthened mandate will shape Japan’s domestic policy and its role on the world stage in the months ahead. As celebrations continue in Tokyo, the global community watches closely how Takaichi’s strengthened mandate will shape Japan’s domestic policy and its role on the world stage in the months ahead.
