A scary dust storm accompanied by rain created havoc in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh last night killing more than 90 people. In Agra 43 people died, in Rajasthan 31 people lost their lives and in Uttar Pradesh 64 people were found dead.
The intense storm uprooted trees, snapped power cables and flattened thatched houses. Agra bore the brunt of this dust storm with 43 people found dead in the district.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Saddened by the loss of lives due to dust storms in various parts of India. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. Have asked officials to coordinate with the respective state governments and work towards assisting those who have been affected.”
The storm struck Delhi on Wednesday evening but no casualties were reported. The storm caused the diversion of 15 flights including two international flights.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered his officers to carry out the relief work. He also asked them to ensure medical aid is given to all those in need. He further added no laxity would be tolerated on part of the officials.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje declared the storm was categorized as a disaster. Raje further stated relief and rescue operations are underway in the three districts affected in Rajasthan.
A compensation of Rs. 4 lakhs for the family of the deceased was announced by the two chief ministers. For the injured a compensation of Rs. 50,000 would be given.
Officials have warned more thunderstorms are expected in Uttar Pradesh for the next two days.
