Mumbai Blasts 1993: Farook Arrested And Deported To India

Today, Yasin Mansoor Mohamed Farooq an aide of the don Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar was deported from Dubai. Farooq was brought to Mumbai and will be produced before the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) Court later in the day.

In 1993, Farooq fled India after the Mumbai serial blasts. In 1995, Interpol issued a Red Notice against Farook. A Red Notice is issued for the arrest of the accused with a view to extradition or similar lawful action.

Farooq faces criminal cases like voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or other means, attempt to take one’s life and several other charges. Currently, Farooq is being interrogated by the CBI in Mumbai.

Farooq’s arrest is seen as a diplomatic victory for India as many accused have found safe havens in Dubai, Pakistan and several other countries.

A Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said, “This is a huge success. He was involved in 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts the links of which can be traced back to Dubai. This is a big blow to (the) Dawood Gang.”

In 1993, the Mumbai blasts claimed the lives of 257 people and leaving over 700 injured. Dawood is said to be the mastermind behind the serial blasts. His accomplices including Abu Salem, Tiger Memon and Yakub Memon fled India after the blasts. Earlier, Yakub Memon was hanged by the neck and Abu Salem is serving a life sentence in India.
