Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed displeasure towards the recent vandalism of the Periyar and Lenin statue. Over the course of two days, two statues of Lenin in Tripura were demolished and one Periyar statue in Tamil Nadu was damaged.
According to a Government statement, PM Modi spoke to Home Minister Rajnath Singh regarding the violence. The Home Minister ordered all states to ensure such incidents do not occur again.
The Periyar statue inside the Tirupattur corporation office was vandalized on Tuesday night. The nose and the glasses were damaged. The police reported the arrest of the accused as one BJP member and another CPI worker.
The bust of BJP icon Syama Prasad Mookerjee was blackened and the face smashed in Kolkata. Mookerjee was the founder of Jana Sangh, BJP’s predecessor.
This sudden need to demolish statues came after two Lenin statues were destroyed after BJP’s win in Tripura. The vandalism was done by a group of BJP workers after it was announced that the ruling party got the majority.
