PM Modi Inaugurates Mizoram’s First Railway Line: Aizawl Joins Indian Rail Network

PM Modi Inaugurated Mizoram’s First Railway Line

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated Mizoram’s first railway line, the Bairabi–Sairang section, marking a historic moment for the northeastern state. For the first time, Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl, is now on the Indian Railways map.

The new 51.38-km track cuts across some of the most challenging terrain in the region, featuring 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges. Among them, Bridge No. 196 rises to 104 metres—taller than Delhi’s iconic Qutub Minar. The project, built at a cost of over ₹8,000 crore, ends at Sairang, just 20 km from Aizawl, with intermediate stations at Hortoki, Kawnpui, and Mualkhang.

Inaugurating the project, the Prime Minister also flagged off three express trains: the Aizawl–Delhi Rajdhani Express, Aizawl–Kolkata Express, and Guwahati–Sairang Express. This move not only reduces travel time but also symbolises the long-awaited connectivity that residents had been demanding for decades.

The commissioning of Mizoram’s first railway line makes it the fourth northeastern capital—after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar—to be linked with the national railway grid. Experts say it will bring down transport costs, boost regional trade, and open doors for tourism and employment opportunities.

Calling the project a “lifeline of transformation,” PM Modi said it highlights India’s engineering strength and commitment to inclusive development under the Act East Policy. For the people of Mizoram, it is more than just a railway line—it is a gateway to new possibilities.
