New Delhi — On Friday, the nation paused in solemn remembrance as Prime Minister Narendra Modi led India’s tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 78th death anniversary at Raj Ghat, Gandhi’s memorial in the national capital. The day also marks Martyrs’ Day, a nationwide observance to honour Gandhi and all who sacrificed their lives for the country.

In a reflective moment at the Gandhi Samadhi, PM Modi placed wreaths and offered floral tributes, underscoring Gandhi’s enduring influence on India’s national ethos. In messages shared on X (formerly Twitter), he highlighted Gandhi’s dedication to Swadeshi — self-reliance — as a cornerstone of a progressive and resilient India. He also reiterated the timeless relevance of non-violence (Ahimsa), quoting ancient Sanskrit verses on truth and righteousness that Gandhi championed throughout his life.

Senior leaders including President Droupadi Murmu, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other dignitaries joined the commemoration. Authorities conducted a Sarva-Dharma Prarthana (all-religions prayer) and Martyrs’ Day ceremony, bringing together officials and citizens in a moment of reflection and respect.

Gandhi, widely recognised as the Father of the Nation, was assassinated on January 30, 1948, while on his way to daily prayers — an event that reshaped the nation’s history. Each year on this day, India remembers his unwavering commitment to peace, truth, and justice, urging the country to uphold the values he lived by.

The tribute at Raj Ghat serves not only as a remembrance of a towering freedom struggle icon but also as a call for unity and moral clarity in contemporary times.
